President’s Corner
Hello Everyone,
Thank you so much for allowing me to serve as your President. It is a great honor and I promise to do my ultimate best.
I am very grateful for the Officers you have elected and the Committee Chairmen who have agreed to serve during this term. They are some of finest women in our Club. I truly appreciate their abilities and enthusiasm. During the year you will have the opportunity to meet them, and, hopefully, work with them on various projects.
In the words of a dear friend who looks at getting lost while driving as a "new
adventure", let us go forward into this administration creating a "new adventure"
-
I have handled the AWC Yearbook many times, but somehow I have skimmed over its Pledge. How many of us really know our Pledge? It reads: "I promise to give the Antioch Woman's Club my hearty support in its entire works."
Our club membership hovers between 190 and 200 members give or take a few -
My pledge to you is that I shall do my ultimate best, but I cannot do it alone. I NEED your help. I am ASKING for your help.
Let's work together to increase our membership for without members there is no club. Let's work together on projects that will benefit the community. Let's work together to create new friendships that will endure over our lifetimes.
"LET'S WORK TOGETHER"
Love and Friendship,
Linda Anne Valentino

Education
By Susan DeRoche, Co-
Welcome back! On behalf of the Education Committee, I would like to welcome all
members to the 2008-
Last Year, An Exciting One! The 2007-
Scholarship Awards! During the months of March, April, and May, members of the Education Committee spent collectively over 118 hours reading approximately 200 scholarship applications from Antioch and Lakes High Schools. On April 24th members met at Angie Fasolo’s house for another three hours and reached consensus on four winners, two from each high school. Those winners were MISS MELISSA ORI and MR. DALTON WEST, from AHS, and MR. PARKER GRIFFIN and MR. PHILIP OSHINSKI, from LHS. On behalf of the Club, I would like to thank members of the committee – MARY BAEHLER, DIANE BUSCH, ANGIE FASOLO, TERRY LOE, CAROL MAPLETHORPE, and DOROTHY VOLKERT – for their dedication to this project about which we all care so much.
Lillie Petty. The committee also selected the recipient of the Lillie Petty Scholarship. That student was MR. KYLE ELROD of Antioch, who will attend Lake County College.
Outstanding Seniors. Our club awarded trophies to the boys and girls selected by their classmates as the Outstanding Seniors of 2007 – 08. CAROL MAPLETHORPE represented our club at the schools’ honors nights to present the lamps of learning to MISS KALLIE KRUMPOS and MR. LUCAS McCLAIN from Antioch, and MR. JOSHUA BECKMAN and MISS COURTNEY BRUETT from Lakes.
Northern Illinois Leadership Seminar. Sophomores from each of our Antioch high schools attended the conference this summer. MISS ELIZABETH MADRZYK from Lakes, and MISS MEGAN PETTY from AHS spent three days at North Park College in Chicago partaking in the leadership activities. Megan is the granddaughter of Lillie Petty! Isn’t that a happy coincidence?
Epsilon Sigma Omicron: ESO is a way to have your personal reading benefit our club! All you have to do is make note of all the books you read on the recording sheets according to categories of your own choice. When you finish four sheets, each sheet a separate category of book, make two additional copies (or just listings) of them. Send your original packet of four sheets (20 books) to Neva Boyce, 9104 Vine Ave, Wonder Lake IL 60097. Give one copy of the packet (or list) to me, to credit our club. And keep one copy for your own records. Just ask Marlene Fernandez or me for a form. Please join LINDA BAKULA, DIANE BUSCH, PAT GOONE, FRAN GROFF, SUSIE LANCASTER, AUDREY LYLE, CAROL MAPLETHORPE, DORIS MILLER, ALLENE NELSON, PAT SMITH, and me, SUSAN DEROCHE, and become a member of ESO, and…enjoy! (If I missed anyone, please let me know. It is difficult to keep track!)
***PLEASE NOTE…A new recording sheet has been provided to us. If you are in the midst of recording your books on the old sheets, PLEASE INCLUDE THE AUTHOR’S NAME WITH EACH SEPARATE BOOK ENTRY. When you need more forms, you may get the new ones from me or on line.***
BOXTOPS AND SOUP LABELS: Thank you to all members who turned in Boxtops for Education and Campbell’s soup labels. They were gratefully received by the WC Petty Elementary School. They are redeemable for valuable equipment for the school’s use. Please note…For Campbell’s products, only submit only UPC symbols and jar lids!
